Caller ID & Spam Prevention

Caller ID & Spam Prevention

Overview

Getting your calls answered depends heavily on how trustworthy your caller ID looks to carriers and to the people you're calling. This guide covers the core building blocks: STIR/SHAKEN attestation, CNAM registration, caller reputation databases, and ongoing spam label monitoring.

STIR/SHAKEN Attestation

STIR/SHAKEN (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited / Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information using toKENs) is a framework that digitally signs calls to verify the caller's identity and combat robocalls and caller ID spoofing. It is currently required for US and Canadian calling.

There are three levels of attestation:

LevelNameDescription
AFull AttestationYour phone number provider verified both your identity and your right to use the number
BPartial AttestationYour provider verified your identity but not your right to use the number
CGateway AttestationYour provider authenticated the call source but could not verify your identity

To enable STIR/SHAKEN, complete a business verification process with your phone number provider (sometimes called a "trust hub" or trust verification portal):

  1. Submit your legal business name, address, and authorized representative
  2. Provide supporting documentation such as business registration and tax ID
  3. Wait for approval, which typically takes 5–7 business days

CNAM Registration

CNAM (Caller Name) displays your business name instead of just your phone number, which significantly improves answer rates and professional credibility.

To register with a CNAM registry through your phone number provider:

  1. Provide your legal business name (exactly as registered with your tax ID), address, business type, and tax ID
  2. Designate an authorized representative with their full name, title, phone, and email
  3. Submit for review, which typically takes 3–5 business days

Use an email address associated with your business domain, rather than a personal email, to help expedite approval.

Caller Reputation Databases

Beyond CNAM, registering with major caller reputation databases reduces the likelihood of your calls being flagged as spam.

First Orion displays your business name and logo on supported devices and reduces spam flagging and call blocking. Register through the First Orion business portal, verify number ownership, and submit branding assets.

Hiya (Free Caller Registry) powers caller ID for millions of users across multiple platforms and provides protection against false spam reporting along with access to call analytics. Create a business account, verify number ownership, and submit your business profile.

Spam Label Remediation & Number Health Monitoring

Ask your phone number provider whether they offer a spam label remediation service. These services can automatically register your numbers with carrier analytic engines and help clear spam labels across major carrier networks. They work best when combined with STIR/SHAKEN attestation, since the highest level of attestation signals to analytic engines that you're a legitimate caller.

You can also use external monitoring services for proactive reputation checks:

  • IPQualityScore — real-time spam risk assessment, carrier identification, and line type detection via a REST API
  • Nomorobo — spam reputation lookup and robocall identification across one of the largest spam databases

Best Practices

  • Maintain consistency — use the same business name across all registrations (CNAM, First Orion, Hiya)
  • Monitor reputation — regularly check caller reputation scores and address spam reports promptly
  • Follow compliance — ensure all outbound calls comply with TCPA regulations and obtain proper consent
  • Update information — keep business details current across all platforms

Proper caller identification setup can take 2–4 weeks to fully propagate across all networks and databases, so plan accordingly when launching new outbound calling campaigns.

In summary, trustworthy caller ID is built from several layers working together: STIR/SHAKEN attestation, CNAM registration, caller reputation database registration, and ongoing spam label monitoring. None of these are one-time setup steps — they require consistent business information and periodic monitoring to keep your numbers healthy.
